Wayland Memorial Day Events Announced

All are invited to Wayland’s annual Memorial Day events scheduled for Monday, May 29th.  Veterans are needed for cemetery honors and parade participation. The bus for the cemetery honors will depart at 7:45 am from the Wayland VFW.  The cemetery schedule is: 8:30am Hooker, 9:00am Native American, 9:25am Germond, 9:45am St. Cyril’s, 10:00am Hill, 10:20am Elmwood.

Beginning at 11:00am is the Annual Memorial Day Parade beginning at the MI State Police Post and concluding at the Wayland VFW Post 7581.  Out of respect for the Veterans, Wayland VFW Post Commander Floyd Hitchcock is requesting that any trucks, big rigs, etc please refrain from using sirens and horns.  City resident and business owner Mike Salisbury stated, “I thought it was a huge improvement when the sirens and horns stopped blaring.” Always remembering those who served is a vital aspect of the Wayland Memorial Day Parade, with the mood more somber and reflective.  While marching bands do play patriotic music, there are no sirens blaring and horns honking (which are common in celebratory parades—including Wayland’s annual Christmas Parade). All parade participants are asked to please refrain from using sirens and horns.

For parade details and City Police parade rules, please view www.waylandchamber.org/eventscommunity. At the parade conclusion, the public is invited to the VFW to enjoy the pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, and Mayor Bala’s Famous Cole Slaw.  The cost is $6.00 per person (cash or checks only).  If you are able to participate for the cemetery honors, would like to volunteer at the luncheon, or have any questions, please contact the Wayland VFW Post #7581 at 269-792-2975.
